Charger Baseball in the Community

Fall practice is in full swing for the Lancaster Bible College baseball team, but that doesn't mean they can't have a little fun. The Chargers loaded up the bus and headed north to Lititz recently and conducted a practice for a group of Little League kids.

The Chargers ran practice and conducted a series of drills and games for the youngsters.

"We went to the scheduled time, but the parents of the kids saw how much fun they were having and said we should just go until it was dark and that's exactly what we did," Charger Manager Doug Yager said.

The drills and games focused on skill stations that had the kids learning base running and hitting skills.

"I heard that the kids were still talking about it at their next practice, so that is great feeling," Yager said.

This past weekend at Homecoming, the Chargers held an alumni baseball game that pitted fathers versus sons and young vs. not-so-young. The game, held Saturday, was watched by almost 100 friends, family and fans.

"There was really good interaction between the current players and the alumni," Yager said.

The game featured the current Charger squad and alumni who could make it back to Lancaster. Current Chargers Joel and Josh Butala got to play alongside their father Jeff who returned to the field for a few hours.

The game wasn't taken lightly by many of the players.

"We had alumni stealing bases and advancing on passed balls all day long," Yager said. "It really meant a lot to them to be able to come back."

While the game ended in a 4-4 tie, the day meant much more than the outcome of the game.

"I think everyone had a great time and it was especially fun for the old guys," Yager said.
